Mandatory Supporting Document

Three Letters of Recommendation from senior, reputed experts in the digital technology industry who can independently vouch for your skills and potential.

Application Process

Applying for the UK Global Talent Visa involves two key stages: obtaining endorsement from an approved body and then applying for the visa itself.

Stage 1: Endorsement Application

If you do not possess a prestigious prize that automatically qualifies you for the visa, securing endorsement is mandatory. For digital technology applicants, Tech Nation or it’s successor is the authorised endorsing body.

Steps to Apply for Endorsement:

Review the latest guidelines on GOV.UK and the Tech Nation website to understand eligibility and documentation requirements. Fully understand the mandatory and optional evidence required

Determine whether you qualify under the Exceptional Talent (experienced leader) or Exceptional Promise (emerging leader) category based on your sector achievements and experience.

Gather all supporting documents including your CV, three recommendation letters from senior digital tech professionals, a portfolio of your work, and evidence of your skills and achievements.

The total base cost for the Global Talent Visa application is £766 per applicant. This cost is divided based on your application strategy:

  • Standard Endorsement Route (Two Payments)

If you are applying based on meeting the criteria for Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise:

Endorsement Fee: £561 (Paid when you submit your application on GOV.UK).

Visa Application Fee: £205 (Paid after your endorsement is successfully granted).

  • Prestigious Prize Route (Single Payment)

If you are applying by relying on having won an eligible prestigious prize, which exempts you from the endorsement process:

The full fee of £766 is paid when you submit the final visa application (in Stage 2).(This is as of 2025).

Upload your comprehensive evidence package to the designated body’s platform within 30 working days of the GOV.UK application.

Tech Nation typically provides a decision within 8 weeks. You’ll usually get a decision on your visa within:

  • 3 weeks, if you’re outside the UK
  • 8 weeks, if you’re inside the UK

You may be able to pay to get a faster decision. If your application is unsuccessful, you can request a review or reapply with improved evidence.

Stage 2: Visa Application

Once your endorsement is secured (or if you qualify via a prestigious prize), you have a three-month window to submit the final visa application.

Steps to Apply for Endorsement:

Complete the visa form on the GOV.UK website.

Check and assemble all necessary supporting documents as listed in guidance.

Complete identity verification using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by attending an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometric information.

  • Visa application fee: £205 (if applying post-endorsement)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year of your intended stay, payable upfront.
  • Upload all supporting documents and formally submit the application.

Processing times vary:

  • Approximately 8 weeks for applications made inside the UK
  • Priority and super-priority services may be available for faster processing, subject to additional fees.

  • Translation Services: Mandatory for all supporting documents not in English or Welsh. Costs vary by language and document length.

Family and Dependents

Eligibility for Partners and Children to Join the Visa Holder

The UK Global Talent visa offers flexibility for successful applicants to bring eligible family members with them to the UK. This family-friendly provision allows top global talent to relocate without leaving loved ones behind. The eligible family members (commonly referred to as dependents) include

Each dependent must meet specific eligibility criteria and provide evidence of their relationship to the main applicant. The Home Office requires clear documentation to establish the authenticity and continuity of the relationship.

Application Process and Associated Costs for Dependents

Each dependent must meet specific eligibility criteria and provide evidence of their relationship to the main applicant. The Home Office requires clear documentation to establish the authenticity and continuity of the relationship.

Costs per Dependent

Documentary Requirements

Each dependent must also prove their identity and nationality, often by uploading documents through the UKVI digital platform or attending an in-person appointment.

Important Note:
The total cost for a family of three (main applicant, partner, and one child) for a 3-year visa could exceed £9,000 once visa fees, IHS charges, and potential extras (like priority services or translation costs) are factored in. It’s essential to budget accordingly and start preparing early.

Pathway to Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain - ILR)

Eligibility Based on Endorsement Route (3 or 5 Years)

For digital technology professionals on the Global Talent visa, the path to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — permanent residency in the UK — depends on how you were endorsed:

This accelerated route to settlement is a major advantage of the Global Talent visa, especially for senior product managers, engineers, founders, and other tech leaders who can demonstrate a strong track record of impact and innovation. It also reflects the UK’s ongoing commitment to attracting and retaining world-class tech talent.

Note: If you initially came to the UK under a different work visa (e.g. Tier 2 or Skilled Worker visa), that time may be combined with your time on the Global Talent visa to meet the ILR residency requirement.

Continuous Residence and Permitted Absences

To qualify for ILR, Global Talent visa holders must have maintained continuous residence in the UK during the 3- or 5-year qualifying period. This means you must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during that time.

For those in digital technology, most work-related travel — such as conferences, client meetings, international deployments, or startup events — will count towards your 180-day limit, so careful tracking is essential.

Unlike those in academic or scientific research (e.g. UKRI route), tech professionals do not benefit from relaxed absence rules for work-related travel. So if your job requires frequent international trips, plan strategically to avoid exceeding the limit.

Evidence of Earnings in the Tech Sector

One of the key ILR requirements is demonstrating that you’ve been actively earning income in the UK within the digital technology sector during your time on the Global Talent visa.

Acceptable evidence includes:

The goal is to show that you have remained professionally engaged in the field for which you were endorsed — whether in product, engineering, design, business development, or another key digital skill set.

Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK

To complete your ILR application, you must satisfy the requirement for Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK (KoLL), unless you are exempt (e.g., due to age or medical condition).

1. Life in the UK Test

Requirement: Must pass the multiple-choice test on British values, culture, history, and society.

Logistics: The test must be taken at an official, approved test centre. The pass notification is valid indefinitely.

2. English Proficiency (CEFR B1 Level)

You must prove English speaking and listening ability at the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1 level or higher. This is typically done by:

Approved Test: Passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B1 level or higher from an approved provider (e.g., IELTS Life Skills B1).

Academic Qualification: Providing evidence of a degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate) that was taught or researched wholly in English, verified by UK ENIC (if awarded outside the UK).

These final integration requirements ensure Global Talent visa holders are prepared for long-term settlement within the UK workforce and society.
